On July 3rd, 1859, the so-called "Vatican on Wheels" (perhaps the most beautiful train of cars ever constructed) made its maiden voyage from Porta Maggiore to Cecchina. It was a gift by the Pio Centrale and Pio Latina companies to Pope Pius IX in recognition of his great enthusiasm for Italian industry. With the pontiff's patronage, railway construction (and many other forms of industrial modernization) sped across the Italian countryside, connecting Rome to Frascati, Civitavecchia, Velletri, Ceprano, Ancona, and Bologna -- nearly 200 miles in less than five years. Switchman's Vatican on Wheels, or Tomato Red, brings forth the oranges, reds, and pinks of the finest Italian tomatoes in one of the most striking inks available as our ode to a pontiff who embraced the future without dishonoring tradition.

Switchman inks prioritize dry speed over permanence and will dry rapidly even when used in very wet pens. They will resist feathering on highly absorbent papers (printer paper, for example) and are tuned to minimize dry-in while still within pens. Switchman inks shade beautifully and many boast color variation the more thickly they are applied.
