With the victory at Yorktown and the signing of the Treaty of Paris, America had secured its independence from Great Britain by 1783. However, as that year drew to a close, a quiet unease crept into the assemblies of that fledgling nation. Never before had such a feat been accomplished and no one really knew what was going to happen next. Many believed that General Washington would accept the calls from many quarters to declare himself king over the new nation. On December 23rd, George Washington appeared before the Continental Congress and stunned the world by voluntarily resigning his commission as Commander-in-Chief and relinquishing his sword to the Congress assembled in the Maryland State House in Annapolis. It was in that very moment that America's future as a republic was truly secured.

Switchman's Republic Red is a salute to the blood spilled to win that victory and every victory since. It is a deep and multi-layered crimson, a fitting tribute to the valor and principle inspired by America's first Commander-in-Chief and the republican virtue for which he stood and served. As our first permanent store exclusive, we hope that the story which inspired Republic Red will inspire every American who uses it in turn.
