After just a few short years operating under the Articles of Confederation, the fledgling United States was on the verge of fracturing. Delegates from twelve of those states gathered in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall in 1787 for what would become the Constitutional Convention. Four long months of debate and compromise would forge a new framework of government -- a federal republic with co-equal powers, robust checks and balances, and mechanisms for long-term amendment. On September 17th, 1787, thirty-nine delegates became signatories to a new United States Constitution. It was a document as revolutionary as the war which had led to its creation and has since inspired countless other foundational documents in nations throughout the world.
As a nation, America will not celebrate the semiquincentennial anniversary of the Constitution for more than a decade, but since we are today celebrating a declaration which began our great project, we cannot simply ignore the document that solidified it. And so, in lieu of any real place for a white ink in the fountain pen world, Switchman has elected to celebrate our nation's founding documents with the creation of a deep and complex sepia tone. 1776 Sepia might just as easily be 1787 Sepia eleven years from now, but the tradition it honors won't change in the slightest. We salute the Founders and their vision and we offer up this small reminder that the pen, in fact, is mightier than the sword!
