The Then Fountain Pen is the most restrained expression of the ConCoPens lacquer collection, focusing on the depth and warmth of traditional Vietnamese lacquer without decorative shell inlay. Built over a natural wood core, the pen is finished through repeated applications of natural lacquer, followed by careful curing and hand-polishing to create a smooth, refined surface.
Vietnamese lacquer, known as sơn ta or laccol, is a natural tree-resin lacquer valued for its distinctive depth, flexibility, and warm sheen. Its slower curing process allows the material to develop a rich sense of depth and character, creating a finish with an enduring beauty that distinguishes Vietnamese lacquer from other traditional lacquer techniques.
The dark surface reveals subtle tonal variation under changing light, giving the pen a quiet, contemplative presence. Its appeal lies in the purity of the lacquer work itself, allowing material, polish, and proportion to define the design.
