The History of the Kaweco Pen Company
Christine Dromgoole
For over a century, the Kaweco Pen Company has remained one of the most recognized names in fountain pens. Known for its compact design, quality construction, and smooth writing experience, Kaweco is a favorite among pen collectors, students, and professional writers alike. At Dromgoole’s Fine Writing Instruments in Houston, Texas, we’ve seen how Kaweco pens continue to attract people of all ages—from those new to fountain pens to seasoned collectors.
This article explores the history of the Kaweco Pen Company, from its early beginnings to its influence on modern writing culture. Whether you're a fan of the classic Kaweco Sport or simply curious about its story, this guide offers a clear look at the brand’s growth and legacy.
Early Beginnings: 1883 in Heidelberg
Kaweco’s story begins in 1883 in Heidelberg, Germany. At that time, two entrepreneurs—Luco and Enßlen—opened a small shop that sold writing instruments and accessories. The original business operated under the name “Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik.”
The pens they offered were dip pens fitted with gold nibs imported from America. In a time before ballpoints, these writing tools filled an important role for students, writers, and professionals. As demand grew, so did the company’s reputation for precision and quality.

The Kaweco Name Is Born
In 1889, entrepreneur Heinrich Koch and his partner Rudolph Weber took over the business. They registered a new name—Kaweco—derived from the first letters of their last names: Koch, Weber & Company.
From that point, the Kaweco Pen Company began producing its own fountain pens. These early pens were crafted from hard rubber and fitted with gold nibs. Kaweco quickly gained recognition for quality and affordability, offering reliable writing tools in a market that was expanding rapidly.
Growth in the 20th Century
Expanding Product Lines
By the early 1900s, the Kaweco Pen Company was one of the leading manufacturers of writing instruments in Germany. They introduced a wide variety of pen models, including piston-fillers and safety pens. These designs helped prevent ink leaks and improved portability, which made fountain pens more practical for daily use.
Kaweco was also one of the first companies to brand its pens clearly with the company name, helping build a strong brand identity. The signature octagonal shape seen in many Kaweco pens today started to take form during this period.
1911: The Birth of the Kaweco Sport
In 1911, Kaweco released one of its most enduring designs—the Kaweco Sport. This pen featured a short, compact barrel that fit easily in the pocket, but with the cap posted, it extended to a full-length writing instrument. Its slogan was simple and clear: “Small in the pocket, great in the hand.”
This design made it especially popular with students, travelers, and military officers during the early 20th century.
Wartime Disruption and Recovery
World War I and World War II created major challenges for many German manufacturers, including Kaweco. Shortages in materials and economic hardship affected production. Despite these setbacks, the Kaweco Pen Company continued operations and adapted its production techniques to meet the conditions of the time.
During World War II, Kaweco faced critical shortages of celluloid, ebonite, and metal parts. Production ground to a halt, and many workers were drafted into military service. Despite these conditions, the company was among the first to restart operations in 1945, focusing on simplified pen models that could be produced with available materials. This resilience helped Kaweco reestablish itself during Germany’s economic recovery.
Closure and Rebirth
Despite its legacy and loyal customer base, Kaweco faced growing competition and changing market conditions in the 1970s.
By the 1980s, fountain pens had fallen out of favor with the rise of plastic ballpoints and cartridge-based pens. Mass production methods made it difficult for traditional pen companies to compete on cost. Kaweco, known for its handcrafted designs and manual assembly, could not sustain its business model. The company shuttered its operations, and the Kaweco name disappeared from shelves—temporarily.
However, Kaweco’s story didn’t end there.
In the 1990s, a stationery company based in Nürnberg called Gutberlet GmbH acquired the rights to the Kaweco name. Recognizing the strength of the brand, they relaunched the company and brought the classic Kaweco Sport back into production. They retained the original design while introducing new materials and colors.
The move paid off. Enthusiasts around the world welcomed Kaweco’s return, and the brand gained a new generation of fans.
